Frandsen Traded to Red Sox
Honestly not much to say about this one; I guess I just wanted an excuse to post my Kevin Frandsen-Tyler Walker picture from FanFest a few years back since this might be the last (and only) time I’ll ever get to use it in a blog post in a relevant manner.
I saw a funny quote from Edgar Renteria where he told Frandsen (upon hearing that he’d been traded for a PTBNL or cash), “That’s all? You suck!” Although Renteria was joking, he was pretty close to the truth.
No offense to Frandsen. He seemed like a pretty amiable guy and I know he was a fan favorite of a lot of people since he’s a San Jose State guy. But it became abundantly clear that it wasn’t going to work for Kevin with this organization, and we couldn’t just keep handing him one opportunity after the next and having him take a roster spot away from someone else who was a more proven guy. Yes he had the Achilles tear that kept him out all of 2008, but when he came back from that we couldn’t get much production out of him. I think it especially all started going downhill for Frandsen with the Giants after those comments he made to the Sacramento Bee about midway through last season where he complained about being in Triple AAA, to which Brian Sabean essentially said, “Keep your mouth shut and keep playing, you’ll do as we tell you to.” That pretty much sealed Frandsen’s eventual exit from San Francisco, in my opinion.
All that being said, I hope Frandsen has success in Boston. He always seemed like an earnest, genuine guy based on what I saw of him in interviews and the brief interaction I had with him at FanFest ’08. Unfortunately, though he’ll need all the luck he can get with trying to get playing time in Boston.

On another note, I’ll try to write a Giants season preview and have it up sometime next week. In the meantime you can check out my last blog entry if you care to read about the deeper significance of baseball in my life.
Can’t wait for the season to start! Ten days and counting.
Winter Meetings Inactivity: A Little Less Conversation, A Little More Action (Please!)
Arguably the best time of the year for Major League Baseball gossip is the one-week stretch in December dubbed oh-so-creatively as the winter meetings, when all the front offices gather in a single hotel and speak to player agents about possible signings or trades. It’s the time of year when I check mlbtraderumors.com even more compulsively than I already do during the offseason, hunting out anything I can find about a San Francisco Giants player–past, present or possibly future.
Unfortunately the week came and went and left me with more things to worry about than get me excited about the 2010 season. I mean, you know it’s bad when the juiciest detail you find is about a prospective swap of Kevin Kouzmanoff for Fred Lewis and Kevin Frandsen.
Yes, there were also rumors about the Giants maybe getting Dan Uggla and maybe looking at first basemen like Nick Johnson, but nothing was confirmed coming out of the week. As usual, Brian Sabean didn’t show any of his cards, but rather made vague hints that the team was at least talking to people. This made me want to bang my head against the wall, though. My instinct as a fan is that I want “a little less conversation, a little more action.” I read somewhere that at this time last year the Giants had already signed Edgar Renteria, Jeremy Affeldt and Bob Howry. Now I know that two of those players were duds this year, so I guess from that I can understand why Sabean might want to take things slower. But as a fan it just makes me nervous that such little activity means that little or nothing will happen to boost our poor offense this offseason. I mean, the only thing that Giants fans did get out of the winter meetings was that Bengie Molina isn’t coming back; I believe the expression Sabean used regarding that was, “That ship has sailed.” So we haven’t done anything so far this offseason, haven’t really been strongly linked to obtaining any good hitter and oh yeah, we’re losing our second best bat who also happens to be the catcher who our elite pitchers Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain are used to. It seems like every free agent catcher out there is getting signed to a two year contract (even guys like Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez”), so why not just bring back Molina on a one-year deal with an option for a second? Couldn’t we just trade him at the trading deadline next July to a(nother) contending team if Bochy and Sabean felt Buster Posey was ready to be the everyday starting catcher? I dunno…I just think that would be the best option all-around because then Molina could mentor Posey and we would be more secure at the starting catcher position and not have to throw Posey out there right away when he’s not ready to start. I know it’s not realistic because Molina wouldn’t want to come back when he knows there’s another catcher waiting in the wings, but I don’t see why the Giants can’t try offering him a contract; instead it seems like they’re just walking away because they assume the Mets or some other team will snatch him up. They shouldn’t be regarding someone like Bengie like that in my opinion, though; not when he’s the guy who’s carried this team offensively (and defensively, one could argue) for the past couple years.
I hope that the Giants will make a move sooner or later, one that shows fans that the team is serious about building on this past season. Until then I guess I’ll just have to keep griping about what hasn’t happened yet…
Feeling Black and (Dodger) Blue
It’s 7-1 Dodgers in the 7th inning and Bob Howry has (predictably) given up a couple runs after Merkin Valdez left with the bases loaded and nobody out.
I think it’s safe to tag this one as a loss.
Oh no, wait. 9-1 Dodgers.
Why is Bochy still using Bob Howry??? Get him off the team!!! He doesn’t contribute anything!!! He’s Tyler Walker all over again!!!
Okay, breathe.
It’s just hard to grasp what has happened to the Giants in the past couple weeks. Ever since they came off that amazing homestand where they swept the Rockies, they’ve been slowly spiraling downward, whereas it’s been the opposite with Colorado, who has been 9-1 since then.
Talk about cruel irony for the orange and black.
But while it is ironic, I wouldn’t say it was a horrible twist of fate or anything like that, because that would suggest that the Giants had a lot of bad luck. But if the Giants don’t make the Wild Card (and each day it’s looking more and more unlikely), it will be wholly their own fault.
Everyone knew going into offseason that our biggest need was hitting, yet the front office did nothing about it until the All Star Break when the Giants were unexpectedly in contention. Yes, Freddy Sanchez was a nice pick up, but what was stopping Sabean from making a move to pick up a solid hitter in the offseason? Why did he have to wait until halfway through the season? Besides not having a lot of power, this team as a whole is often terribly impatient at the plate (hence why Kuroda only had a pitch count of 62 going into the 7th inning tonight against, and it’s been well documented that they can’t play small ball through their lack of bunting skills.
Speaking of which, that reminds me of an interesting quote I heard earlier today. As I think I’ve mentioned before, this summer I’ve been working as an intern at KNBR. Today was my last day since I’ll be going back to college next weekend, and I worked a KNBR sponsored client batting practice at the ballpark. It was a pretty cool event that gave people an opportunity to hit and field at AT&T Park, and along with that they got to meet former Giants Vida Blue and Tito Fuentes. After the batting practice a Q&A session was held in the visitors’ dugout where guests got to ask Vida and Tito questions about their careers, although not many people asked questions; a lot of it was the two of them going off and telling their own stories, which was just as interesting and entertaining. Anyway, at one point Vida Blue brought up the Giants’ inability to do the little things and used Kevin Frandsen’s pop-up bunt in the eighth inning of a game against the Padres a few days ago as an example. He essentially said that you can’t do that because it’s Major League Baseball, and he joked, “Tito could’ve gone up and gotten it done.” While Vida was mixing humor into what he said here, you could tell he was still being serious, and I just found it interesting that he was pretty blunt about it.

On a side note, although I’m only nineteen and therefore wasn’t alive to see Fuentes and Blue when they played, I appreciated being around them today. They were both really friendly and outgoing and interacted with fans the entire time, with Fuentes giving people coming up to bat hitting tips and Blue throwing a short live pitching session to some of the clients. I also thought Vida was especially classy when he called for a moment of silence during the Q&A to honor the victims of 9/11.
I really don’t enjoy complaining about my baseball team; like I’ve said before, in the end no matter how critical I get of the Giants, they will still always be my favorite team. But lately they haven’t been giving us fans much to be happy about, and tonight was no exception. They got shut down by another not-so-great pitcher in Hiroki Kuroda, who at one point retired nineteen batters in a row. It seems like ever since the final game against the Rockies during the homestand, the momentum they kept rebuilding has finally run out. Tonight they had an opportunity to start building it back up again after a poor series against a poor team, but instead they got blown out by their archrival with one of their aces on the mound. Needless to say, this was the worst case scenario in terms of how to start the biggest six-game stretch of the year.
I really want to believe in this team. I’ll fully admit I was one of the people who had very, very little hope left after the 14-inning game in Colorado. Well, they proved me wrong and stormed back to tie the Rockies in the Wild Card the same week I thought they were done. But based on how the past few series’ have gone for the Giants, my hope is starting to fade.
I was going to end this entry with, “Oh well, at least the Rockies lost”, but no. They came back against the Padres and won 4-1.
